[Closed] Entity Framework Core Feature Suggestions

This web site is no longer being monitored by the EF team at Microsoft.

We have decided to unify our feedback process to focus on our existing issue trackers over at GitHub.com. We are not planning to migrate the list of ideas posted here automatically, because some of these ideas and votes were submitted a long time ago and therefore the number of votes likely does not accurately reflect the current priority for customers.

You are welcome to re-submit your favorite ideas to our issue trackers. We only request that you first search for existing issues and try to avoid creating duplicates.

Please visit the EF Core issue tracker or the EF6 issue tracker depending on what product you want to report bugs, make contributions, or submit ideas for.

Note that our team will only fix bugs, implement small improvements and accept community contributions on the EF6 codebase. Larger feature work and innovation will happen only on EF Core.

If you want to learn how to use our products, visit our documentation pages.

If you have technical questions or need help, try Stack Overflow’s EF Core or EF6 tags.

  1. Make it easier to map MEST scenario's between the entities and the poco's

    Summary:
    It's rather confusing and complex trying to map entities (the table/view representations that were added to the EF Designer) to a single POCO.

    Details:
    Currently, if we wish to have a MEST scenario, we need to manually code this mapping in various places. Now, manually coding is not really a big deal .. it's just that there's a number of quirks and tricks that make this process frustrating and a bit confusing.

    It would be extremly appreciated (and more productive) if the mapping of these Entites on the designer, to their POCO, could be done visually IN the designer,…

    • Updateable Views

      I would like to see update-able views. This is available in Telerik ORM, and I have found it very helpful in situations where I initially assumed a grid would only need to display read only data, but was months later asked to allow editing.

      There are other ways to do this of course, but they require recoding. This would make certain maintenance tasks easy.

      • Compiled Code First

        The current EDMX designer doesn't work well for enterprise scenarios - it becomes incredibly cumbersome as the number of entities grows. For example:
        * It forces the developer to arrange entities visually - once you get over about 10 entities or complex relationships between them, it becomes difficult to do.
        * It's difficult to find entities - rather than scan for them alphabetically, I need to scroll around a complex diagram I don't really want.
        * The wizards get in the way - updating my model continually prompts me to modify my connection strings, I need to manually select the…

        • Deprecate Timestamp annotation in favor of RowVersion

          Considering that "timestamp" has been deprecated in SQL Server for some time and is a synonym for the more precise denomination "rowversion", introduce the RowVersion data annotation in EF as an alternative to Timestamp and mark the current Timestamp annotation as deprecated.

          • Map multiple entities to same table

            I should be able to map multiple models to the same table. For example consider a User table. I may have a model for logging in, changing a password, resetting a password and maintaining a user. I would normally create different domain models for each of these use cases. However, I am not able to map these models to a single table.

            Here is a link with a workaround by MSFT, but would like to avoid workaround...

            • Partial-selection and auto-mapping for DTOs

              I've read the post http://blogs.msdn.com/b/adonet/archive/2011/01/30/using-dbcontext-in-ef-feature-ctp5-part-5-working-with-property-values.aspx, it's beautiful, and I have some additional requests:

              1) I should be able to decorate some properties in my DTOs so it can have a different name (or decorate them at runtime with type-description).
              2) Should be able to select partial queries:
              - Via property selectors (both typed and strings) via DTO initializers
              - Via constructor of another class (in EF4 this is not allowed) I mean .Select(u=> new FatUnicorn(u.Id, u.CornLength));
              - As per the previous example, should also be: context.Unicorns.Select<UnicornSummary> using the method of assigning matching property names or decorated with attributes as…

              • Ability to intercept when an association is being changed

                There should be an AssociationChanging in System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.RelatedEnd class, so I can validate before items get attached to a relation.

                • Throw exception when you attempt to access a navigation property that is not loaded

                  Of course this should be an optional feature that can be enabled from the DbContext configuration. It only makes sense when Lazy Loading is disabled.

                  This will be particularly useful for writing domain models that are independent of the data access technology and thus cannot use the EF functions to check whether a property is loaded.

                  Currently, if the logic inside the domain model tries to access a navigation property that is not loaded, this will either fetch the data from the database if lazy loading is enabled (a lot of developers do not like lazy loading) or, if lazy…

                  • Support JSON LINQ queries

                    As MS is adding json support to Sql Server 2016 it would be great if EF could support this with linq queries and convert a tree with arrays to nested lists.

                    • Updating the F# SqlEntityConnection Type Provider

                      The F# SqlEntityConnection Type Provider is a third way to interact with Entity framework (with the other two being an .edmx file and Code First).
                      http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh362322.aspx

                      This Type Provider doesn't support the updated low-level API changes that EF 6 requires, as far as I can tell. I'd love to have an updated version that supports the async features of EF 6.

                      • More information from referential integrity constraint violation exception

                        I get so frustrated by the referential integrity constraint violation and the fact that the exception thrown contains no information about which fields are causing the problem.

                        Here's the full message for reference:
                        "A referential integrity constraint violation occurred: The property values that define the referential constraints are not consistent between principal and dependent objects in the relationship."

                        Could you please update this exception to provide some key information so that we can track this issue down?

                        Thanks,

                        • Filtering support in databinding

                          Add Filter and Sort support to Windows Forms BindingSource when bound to EF as in example below.

                          Dim context As New MyEntities
                          context.Employees.Load()
                          EmployeeBindingSource.DataSource = context.Employees.Local.ToBindingList()

                          'Would like the following to then work
                          EmployeeBindingSource.Filter = "FirstName = 'SANTA'"
                          EmployeeBindingSource.Sort = "FirstName"

                          I use data-driven filters stored outside of the application, so new filters and sorts may be added without new code.

                          • let me save expensive intermediate LINQ results in temp table

                            LINQ-to-Entities should offer an anaogous operator to AsEnumerable() but instead of materializing results on the client, it would materiailze results on the server (e.g. a temp table for SQL Server), allowing subsequent operators to re-use intermediate results without risking additional server recomputation or requiring a round-trip from client to server.

                            The underlying requirement is to make it easier to build and maintain performant LINQ queries that use millions of rows, many complex joins, I/O intensive calculations like running totals or self-joins, or all of the above.

                            For these kinds of queries in T-SQL, a good way to get predictable performance…

                              • Support ignoring columns with database provided default value

                                If a database defines a default for a column then the column does not need to be mapped to a conceptual schema property anymore. The column is optional (like nullable columns) and the model should validate even if no mapping for the column is defined.

                                • Ability to intercept and cancel changes to properties

                                  (Note that the original description of this idea talked about making PropertyChangingEventArgs cancellable. Although this is an interesting request, it is not a change we could implement in EF. In fact, there is probably not way it can be implemented in .NET without defining a new standard interface for change tracking)

                                  Rather than declining the idea, I am renaming it to capture the essence that is still potentially applicable to EF: provide a hook that can be used by an application or library to intercept what happens whenever EF detects that a property of a tracked object is being changed…

                                  • Write EntitySet as XML like DataTable.WriteXML()

                                    Ability to save contents of a loaded entity set into an xml file to persist into hard disk then load again like is possible in data tables

                                    • Be able to configure initial value for identity column

                                      Currently when configuring Identity columns we can't declare the initial value. It would be nice to add an option in order to specify the initial value. This is not respected when we reverse engineer an existing database as well

                                      • Future Queries

                                        I didn´t find any topic about this, but is very important.

                                        Its described here: https://github.com/loresoft/EntityFramework.Extended#future-queries

                                        // build up queries
                                        var q1 = db.Users
                                        .Where(t => t.EmailAddress == "one@test.com")
                                        .Future();

                                        var q2 = db.Tasks
                                        .Where(t => t.Summary == "Test")
                                        .Future();

                                        // this triggers the loading of all the future queries
                                        var users = q1.ToList();

                                        • Add FILEGROUP Support

                                          It should be possible to create tables, indices, etc. on different file groups in order to improve performance.
