Entity Framework Feature Suggestions

Welcome! You can use this site to tell the Entity Framework Team what features you want to see in future versions of our products.

Note that moving forward our team will be only fixing bugs, implementing small improvements, and accepting community contributions in the EF6 codebase. Larger feature work and innovation will happen in the EF Core codebase.

Please consider other options besides this site!

  • If you have technical questions or need help, try StackOverflow (EF6 and EF Core) or visit our forums.
  • If you want to learn how to use our products, visit our documentation pages.
  • If you want to report bugs or make contributions, visit our project pages on GitHub: EF6 and EF Core.

How can we improve Entity Framework or Entity Framework Core?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • Generate database update script for Model First

I am creating a Database with the Model First SQL Script Generation. Then later when I need to Update the Model I don't want to delete all tables and content, I want to generate an update Script.

Its possible in EF4 with an Tool:
      http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/df3541c3-d833-4b65-b942-989e7ec74c87/

but in EF5 there is atm no possibility to update the Model with "Model first".

Idea: perhaps try to include the SQL-Schema Comparer in EF.

      • EF Core Migrations Column ordering

Migrations on EF Core should do Scaffolding of the fields of entity like the order of the entity (and NOT alphabetical)

        As this req:
        https://github.com/aspnet/EntityFramework/issues/2272
        and
        https://github.com/aspnet/Scaffolding/issues/398

        • Class diagram for Code-First POCO classes

Need a new type of ClassDiagram tool for Code-First POCO classes which should be similar to Entity Designer, capable of showing relationships, keys, db schema related meta data etc.

          • Designer support for editing store model

The EF designer only allows you to edit the model, not the store. This means the EF designer only contains 50% of the functionality required to actually do model-first development. Without being able to add tables, views, stored procedures, and constraints there is nothing to map your entity properties to.

The only alternative way is to "Update model from database...", but it forces you to create entities for the tables you import, when all you really want is for you tables to be listed in your store and available to be mapped to. Furthermore, if a table in the DB…

            • WAQS

Adopt the WAQS framework into EF source code

WAQS framework is a layer of abstraction over the Entity Framework

WAQS is addressing many of the painful scenarios under EF, with a great design and productivity.

              • Enhance Enums by creating a Lookup Table with the Enum items

Now that EF 5 supports enums, please (optionally) create Lookup Tables in the database with the enum items or store them in the metadata.

This enables Lightswitch and other apps to reconstruct the enums/use the Lookup Tables.

                • Generate repositories and units of work

I'd like to see a well designed EF project template that made use of the Repository pattern for abstracting the data access technology. This should showcase best practices for using Code-First and POCO entities, UnitOfWork abstractions, solutions for querying entities that span multiple repositories, etc. This information is pretty hard to come by for EF but available in abundance for other ORMs.

                  • Entity Framework support for Windows Store apps

System.Data.dll -- which is fundamental to EF -- is not available inside Windows Store Apps. Thus development of Windows Store apps is two steps back of where WPF and Silverlight development have been.

Create a client side profiler that will log running queries and statistics for the various data contexts. Also provide helpful tips to improve performance if applicable. Similar to what NHProf already does for NHibernate.

                        • Having a real designer...

It should be great to have a designer which supports all mapping (so which allow us to realize TPC, Horizontal Entity Splitting).
It should be great to have a designer that supports partial model views as I did (http://msmvps.com/blogs/matthieu/archive/2009/04/07/edm-designer-new-version.aspx, http://msmvps.com/blogs/matthieu/archive/2009/04/11/edm-designer-new-feature.aspx)
It should be great to be able to see complex types on the designer and not only on Model Browser window as I did (http://msmvps.com/blogs/matthieu/archive/2009/01/07/edm-designer.aspx).
It should be great to not lose all our ssdl changes when we update the model from db.

There should be a standard EF Test Suite. As the test suite ideally could run against any of the databases, it would ease out the work required to see compliance against different Databases

In a large enterprise environment we use vs2010 dbproj to maintain schema objects. The workflow to re-create after changes to schema requires us to deploy a db schema run edmgen2 and re-import all exiting functions and rebuild complex types. Provide a tool that reads dbschema to build edmx and retains functions and complex types if no changes in signatures

                                • EdmGen.exe should support generating an edmx file from a connection string

EdmGen.exe should support generating an edmx file from a connection string.

In .net 3.5, EdmGen2.exe (http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/EdmGen2) was able to generate an edmx file from a connection string.

But for (EF) .net 4.0, we have lost this ability.

                                  Thank you.

                                  • Compiled Code First

The current EDMX designer doesn't work well for enterprise scenarios - it becomes incredibly cumbersome as the number of entities grows. For example:
                                    * It forces the developer to arrange entities visually - once you get over about 10 entities or complex relationships between them, it becomes difficult to do.
                                    * It's difficult to find entities - rather than scan for them alphabetically, I need to scroll around a complex diagram I don't really want.
                                    * The wizards get in the way - updating my model continually prompts me to modify my connection strings, I need to manually select the…

Updating the title. The part about reverse engineering a database into a Code First model is included into our VS tooling in EF 6.1. I mark that as completed and split the part about having a “compiled” Code First model that loads very fast, but splitting ideas is not supported in UserVoice :)

                                    • Customize ModelObjectItemWizard to be able to add new items

I want to be able to customize Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.VisualStudio.ModelWizard.ModelObjectItemWizard
So I can add my custom items to Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.VisualStudio.ModelWizard.Gui.ModelBuilderWizardForm like I show on this updated screenshot
                                      http://clip2net.com/clip/m407107/8fb72-entity-framework-wizard-customization2-35kb.png?nocache=1

In particular I want to add "ASP.NET Identity 2.0 EF Designer model" which will already contain all the entities required for ASP.NET Identity 2.0 to work.

                                      • Support for SQL Server Change Data Capture -- or at least tables with no primary keys

Change Data Capture is one of the coolest features in SQL Server 2008+. I know it's not core to tailor things for one database technology, but this feature is completely unsupportable in the current EF because EF doesn't allow tables without PKs (and the tables SQL Server gens for CDC have no PKs). Ideally, some sort of real support would be allowed that would allow for some sort of Entity.CDC or something that would string together the tables that an entity uses ... but that is probably a bridge too far.\

                                        • Remove sysdiagrams from Tables in Update Model From Database

SysDiagrams always appears in the list of table when Upgrading Model from Database. This is just noise and therefore a nuisance.
