Entity Framework Feature Suggestions

Welcome! You can use this site to tell the Entity Framework Team what features you want to see in future versions of our products.

Note that moving forward our team will be only fixing bugs, implementing small improvements, and accepting community contributions in the EF6 codebase. Larger feature work and innovation will happen in the EF Core codebase.

Please consider other options besides this site!

  • If you have technical questions or need help, try StackOverflow (EF6 and EF Core) or visit our forums.
  • If you want to learn how to use our products, visit our documentation pages.
  • If you want to report bugs or make contributions, visit our project pages on GitHub: EF6 and EF Core.

How can we improve Entity Framework or Entity Framework Core?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. table splitting with more than two tables without one2one navigation of each object

table splitting is fine if you want to splitt one table to two object. If you want to splitt it to more than two objects you need to provide one to one relationship between each object at the moment.

    • Setting for code generation to set to default instead of none

When generating the EF model from the SQL database, it sets the code generation property to none and generates two tt files automatically.
Could there please be an option for the code generation to set to default instead?
I know there is a work-around by deleting the tt files and manually setting code generation to default, it would just make life a little easier if there was a setting to do this.
We are working on a fledgling project with many aspects that are not decided yet and therefore we make a lot of DB changes and the workaround gets…

      • Better syncing for 'update model from database'

If I have a database-first model, add a new db table then use "Update model from database" the wizard shows the new table and it is added to the model just fine

If I delete that table and update again, the table shows on the 'Delete' tab of the wizard but after clicking 'finish' the object still shows on the edmx diagram and the table's class file is still in my project. The only way to cleanup is to manually edit the edmx and delete the class files.

This is a problem for maintenance because for eg. I might not…

          • TryUpdateModel should give more information

The TryUpdateModel should give more information when it fails.

            http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.mvc.controller.tryupdatemodel.aspx

Just lost a few hours to figure out why some models don't get updated via the Entity Framework + asp.net mvc 3.

When looking at stackoverflow, I'm not the only one having this problem.

An exception, an extra overload with an out parameter, .. would be great.

            • Add the Distinct clause to the C# Query Expression Syntax

According to this MSDN page : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/bb546153(v=vs.120).aspx the Distinct clause for the query expression syntax exist in VB but not in C#.

              Please add it to C#.

                • Left Join

Please iclude LeftJoin, now when I must to do LeftJoin, i must use GroupJoin instead. Writing GroupJoin code is very hard to see. So I prefer LeftJoin, like context.Join(...) so now is context.LeftJoin(...)

A way to set a ServiceLocator into the DbContext, so that EF can materialize the POCO with parametered constructors.

                        • Better match to SQL querying power and control over loading data

I believe Linq to SQL and EF need to step forward in terms of giving power to developers to perform object-oriented queries against database. Many developers find it difficult to work with Linq to SQL because it is a world-away from T-SQL, also EF does not provide a way to query individual fields from database which has huge performance drain. I think the SF team needs to check out Salesforce SOQL. It puts a lot of power in developer's hand and yet it is very similar to T-SQL.

                            • Database First Schemas to Namespace

I would like the option to separate Entities base on schema, e.g. I have a single database that has two sets of tables that have the same names but are in different Schemas it would be nice to create a single data model that does this. At the moment I have to create different models for each schema is separate folder to get what I want but then I cant have relationships between them.

                              Thanks
                              Steve

                                    • Support for Enums with Strange Names

Support for Enumerations that use string fields would be outstanding, kind of like you can do in Visual Basic with Enum.["String Name"]. This would add a lot of flexibility.

                                      • Support for multiple result sets in .ExecuteFunction() / .ExecuteQuery()

A few overload methods can be added, for example:

                                        public Tuple<T1, T2> ExecuteQuery<T1, T2>(string query) { ... }
                                        public Tuple<T1, T2, T3> ExecuteQuery<T1, T2, T3>(string query) { ... }
